Water bills when moving house

Take meter readings at both properties on moving day, tell each supplier promptly and keep photographs. Unlike energy, household water companies are appointed by area rather than chosen by the customer.

Leaving your old home

Submit a final reading, your moving date and a forwarding address. Keep a photo of the meter and the final statement. If the property is unmetered, the company will normally apportion charges to the move date.

Opening the new account

Find the regional supplier, register from the date you become responsible and send an opening meter reading. Water and wastewater may be provided by different companies, although one company may collect both charges.

Estimate the new bill

Start with the regional average, then adjust for household size and meter status. An unmetered charge can change significantly between otherwise similar homes because it is linked to historic rateable value.

Remember

This guide provides general information. Your supplier’s tariff, bill and support-team advice take precedence for your account.
